i caught about an hour of what i would without hesitation rate as one of the top 5 shows i've ever been to. he is an amazing performer. listen to me: if you ever get the chance to see this guy live, do it! i'm hoping he comes back through town soon.

amazing. and the cul thing was, by the end of this old skinny dirty white guy's loud raunchy set, i was happy again. i was clear again. i wasn't going to kill myself.

now i just wished i'd held off last night on buying those two mallonee disks because pastemusic.com also has denison and chuck for sale on their site. oh well...just a little more shipping is all i guess...

survivin'. dm.

</dc:description><dc:identifier>82228300</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>CNN.com - IMF protesters arrested in DC - Sep. 27, 2002

</dc:description><dc:identifier>82204545</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>pastemagazine.com Catching Up With Over the Rhine

</dc:description><dc:identifier>82194883</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>Bought two Bill Mallonee CD's from pastemusic.com last night after posting that bit. That's because I dropped my 5 hour Bosnian class and traded it in for a 1 hour morning sit-in with Miriam. She's now taking her admin training from 9-4.

The thing was, I had 5 hours a day to work on Bosnian, but that was all the time I had for it. And to get it one really needs to study an additional 3-4 hours on top of that. And even if I had the time, after 5 hours my brain was fried and all I was good for was staring blankly at one of my many projects.

You might have seen this coming…. etc.

There are many factors, a new teacher last week who seemed to hate me, a book which is complete shite but cannot be changed because it was dictated by the head of the department, and a language that is so f-ing complicated! Every sentence involves about 10 calculations.

I eat old cheese and drink cold beer.
<s>accusative verb / masculine inanimate object / accusative / neuter object
Ja jedem stari sir i pijem hdladne pivo.

I think. Most likely tho, I'm wrong.</s>

Update: Miriam came home and helped me out:
first person singular personal pronoun / first person singular verb / accusative case masculine singular adjective / accusative masculine inanimate singular object / accusative neuter singular adjective / accusative neuter singular inanimate object
Ja jedem stari sir i pijem hladno pivo.

I only misspelled "cold" is all. :)

When we learn languages growing up, first of all, we have years and years to learn it. Then we learn to speak it long before we learn to write it or get our endings right. Why as adults do we do it backwards? We start out in Jr. High grammar class and work our way back down to a pre-K speaker's functionality years later? Surely there is a better way. I just don't know what it is….

Which brings me to another thought: the real shame is that I hadn't already started to learn Slovak 5 years ago. What does that say about me, that I can't speak my wife's native language? (A: I'm a shit.) (Part of the deal with Bosnian is that it is close to Slovak and will help me when I attempt to learn Slovak for real in a year or so.) More so, what does that say about Miriam that her native language is so complex? (A: she's the shit.)

And what of our language, of which there has been so much debate lately in certain circles? There's someone I'm following who is teaching English in Japan:

check this little story out: "i have a very pragmatic sensibility; i like to be prepared. my head is very sensitive to the sun, so today, quite sensibly, i brought along my hat. my friend thinks a hat isn't necessary, but, to me, it makes sense." ooosh, that's tough stuff --consumptive

</dc:description><dc:identifier>82153378</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>Reason Daily Brickbat: Absurd news bites, served fresh every day.

</dc:description><dc:identifier>82151429</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>GB02 imagine

"self titled" .. enroute thursday

The obvious remark made by Adam upon the sight of this was, "As opposed to analog air..."

over the rhine, friday night

I couldn't get close enough to get a decent image with the light available. This one is actually from a shot zoomed out the most (28mm on my camera). In the print, Karen, Linford, and Jack are tiny, but the scanner makes up for it a bit and I was able to crop a lot and keep them big. I have shots zoomed in closer, but the shutter had to stay open for so long that they're quite blurry (although I do have a cul one of Linford moving up to the mike {*maybe* I'll put that one up}). Anyway, I realized after a few color shots and a couple black and white (which hopefully exposed more quickly and there4 will be better shots--I'll find out this afternoon) that I was going to see OtR in Virginia at a *much* smaller venue (Oct. 17 Jammin Java), where I could get much better shots. (Keep an eye out for some great {i hope} b/w Bill Mallonee shots from GB, tho! He was in a much smaller venue and I pretty much got right up to him.)

</dc:description><dc:identifier>82146728</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>Cecilia * News

Cecilia is very thrilled to announce that after about 18 months of realizing the inevitable, we have finally and very willingly been dropped by Atlantic Records. After playing a one hour set, Papa Smurf himself stood up, made a few hand motions, and to everyone’s surprise said...

</dc:description><dc:identifier>82124374</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>GB2002 ... images ...*finally!* ...i'm going to spread these out (especially considering i still don't have the b/w's done! :)

tea tent, friday

</dc:description><dc:identifier>82108186</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>Rebecca D'Angelo Photography -- I met Rebecca today at the Java Shack. Perhaps it's because of integration research, but who really knows.

I keep discovering artists as of late, again I don't know why. I honestly didn't know who Vonnegut was two weeks ago, and now I've seen his name pop up everywhere, it seems. Same with Tom Robbins, whose book now graces my bookshelf, and there are more coming in the mail.

Another thing that has intriqued me is the multi-valenced --and I must aside here, because I stole that from Ryan, who flattered me by describing my work that way after my performance on Friday...Miriam mentioned his email to us which was also very encouraging-- nature of these artists. I mentioned one of my favorite artists Michael Knott last week (and covered one of his songs Friday). He has been doing music, painting, and now sculpture. 1giantleap (see link from prior post) is a couple of musicians with digital video cameras and and eye for "traveling right" (as I would say).

The main thread I can see in all of these human beings is that they are living what I would call an artistic life. Perhaps this is what I am after with my tagline seeking :: stories :: beauty :: meaning (recently appended with "whatever the fuck that means" at live performances).

To wit (not sure what that means exactly but I like it): Yesterday I penned this to a friend in the UK:

i have a theory that god raises all the really great musicians for himself and kills them early so he can have them to himself (at the time i was talking about jeff buckley). i am facinated by artists such as pollock, who had such genius, yet such insecurity and such destructive tendencies. sometimes i wonder if they were just too close to god's creativity to cope down here on earth. then i wonder if that's just a great excuse for my own insecure masicism. still, it's a shame most great artists are broke and hated during all or most of their lives, and only after they're gone do we really begin to appreciate what they did and said. this i do know for sure: it's because they are the prophets, and the better they are, the further off the realization of that prophecy is. many times it is realized after their death. so if follows no one is interested. to be a real lover of art you have to either have a prophetic eye yourself or just blind faith in the prophet. it's sad, really, that in a fear of the prophets the modern church has forced itself into irrelevancy.

...
The end of the story with the image below (from two posts ago) is that it offended a lot of people and someone put white paint on it. Destroyed a prophetic work. Someone send me the bible verse that says you'll go to hell for that, because it was no doubt a christian who did it.
...

And in a final bit of noise, speaking of Buckley, about a week ago I finally got the Jeff Buckley DVD. Buckley has been one of those artists for me that has taken a long time to warm up to. But those are always the best. They don't wear out quickly. Considering it has taken years for me to get into him, I don't think he'll ever wear. This DVD is amazing. I'm going to try and get some of the audio from the EPK (Electronic Press Kit for you non-music-industry-types) onto some highly-compressed mp3 for you all so, if you haven't already, you can hear this amazing prophet softly speak the Truth to you. Stay tuned for that. Also, I didn't know Scott was there! You bastard! Why didn't you tell us! :) (admittedly, that also looks like Barry Manilow)

</dc:description><dc:identifier>81997073</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>1giantleap.tv

</dc:description><dc:identifier>81994740</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>

</dc:description><dc:identifier>81994151</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>BBC NEWS | Technology | Learn for free online

</dc:description><dc:identifier>81973464</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>Jarvis Rockwell's "Maya"

"It's all of it," says Jarvis Rockwell. "Like real love of humanity, it's less critical."

...

</dc:description><dc:identifier>81954300</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>

2002_09_14_fray_day_6 -- pics.
