When literature works on you, it does so in silence, in your dreams, in your wordless moments. Good words enter you and become moods, become the quiet fabric of your being. Like music, like painting, literature too wants to transcend its primary condition and become something highter. Art wants to move into silence, into the emotional and spiritual conditions of the world. Statues become melodies, melodies become yearnings, yearnings become actions.
-- Ben Okri, "Beyond Words", A Way of Being Free found on Over the Rhine

</dc:description><dc:identifier>80071848</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>Welcome to RejectionLine.com

</dc:description><dc:identifier>80070414</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>

<dc:title/><dc:description>http://www.hyperorg.com/backissues/joho-jul24-02.html#marketing apparently many authors are upset that Amazon is offering used copies of their books on the very pages that offer their books for sale. It's easy to see why: Given a choice of buying Small Pieces for $17.50 new or $11.00 used, you may opt for the used book and deprive me of my $3.75 royalty (well, $3.19 after my agents get their well-deserved cut).
I have thought long and hard about this and have a well-worked-out position that I believe argues irrefutably from first principles while also incorporating the relevant utilitarian and social-communitarian considerations. It argues the following to authors:
Tough shit.
Authors have never gotten paid by everybody who reads their books or else we'd shut down those dens of iniquity: libraries and used book stores. As a society, we want to encourage people to have access to ideas. So, yes, authors are going to lose some money they could have made if it were harder for people to find used books. But that's the nature of the business you're in. I.e., as I said, the fecal matter is sturdy and impervious. And it seems I'm always pissing someone off, I'm either being called an intellectual liberal blah blah blah by a conservative or an simpleton conservative by a liberal. And I think I'll continue to use the word liberal, despite the fact that half the discussion was over the semantics of the word, because all I've figured out so far is that liberals think they have it figured out, but conservatives know they've figured it out.

I, of course, will never figure it the f$$k out.

But today I was comforted by some of the words over at theyblinked:

...one such questioner was incredulous at my verbal posture as if somehow my words and motivations were unnecessarily complex and situationally arrogant. my response is always rather simple. i don't think for anyone's pet constituency. i don't carry a banner of revolution for any particular messianism. i speak out of the stories within which i find myself for a community that, due to my trans-cultural mongrel upbringing, is a bit more diverse than many are comfortable with.

in language that is perhaps less obtuse all the while pregnant with an ambiguity far more profound: it is all about the other kingdom.

...for the first time in my life
i feel like it is truly inevitable
that i will not only be disappointed by,
but will be a very real disappointment to people

...the quickest way to not disappoint is to pretend.
i am just not willing to do that anymore.

</dc:description><dc:identifier>79826661</dc:identifier><dc:subject/>

<swim:publish>publish</swim:publish>
</rdf:RDF>
